Part Six (Cabo San Lucas to Espíritu Santos)

Finally, we reached Cabo San Lucas! Civilization never seemed so sweet. We anchored and dressed and got ready to go to El Squid Roe, a family “friendly” bar and restaurant. It’s filled with lights, shouting, loud music and dancing. Not to mention heavy drinking. I didn’t like it at all, and at the end of the night, an intoxicated man wandered off with my bag. (I got it back the next day, thank goodness.) Cabo was very much a tourist fish massacre and party place, and we were keen to leave. After our friend Doug left, we debarked for Frailes on the 16th of November. It was sweet relief to be back in a quiet, uneventful anchorage!

We went off to Bahía de los Muertos, or Bay of the Dead. They are – in vain – trying to change the name to Bay of Dreams, but I think Bay of the Dead sounds much cooler. We went to the second only restaurant which was actually quite nice. We spent a lot of time hanging out with our friends on Jersey Girl and Epiphany, snorkeling and exploring around the pretty, white sand bay. The snorkeling wasn’t that bad, healthy coral and some fabulous fish. Thanksgiving was spent here which was quite different.

And off we sped! We were heading to one of the fingers of Espíritu Santo, specifically Bahia Raza, with Bill and Julianne on Epiphany. Anchoring in the dark is a not a particularly fun task, especially when you’re less than 100 ft away from rock walls, which you don’t see until they are right next to you. Great. We managed ok, trying not to freak out whenever the wall got too close to our starboard side for comfort.

We spent a long time in Raza, simply because it was so peaceful and we really didn’t want to leave this hidden sanctuary just yet. The snorkeling was alright, but that’s because where I am now – very far from Mex – has been incredible and nothing really compares. The water there was a cerulean blue, and the fish were few, but beautiful. We snorkeled twice there, but wished we had done more. If you get the opportunity to go there, don’t pass up the chance.
